About the FRCEM Intermediate Exams

The MRCEM Parts B and C have been replaced by the FRCEM Intermediate Certificate.

What is the FRCEM Intermediate?

The MRCEM Parts B and C have been replaced by the FRCEM Intermediate Certificate. Completion of the FRCEM examinations (Primary/Intermediate/Final) results in the award of Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. The FRCEM Primary and Intermediate examinations are required for entry into ST4+ Emergency Medicine training in the UK.

The FRCEM Intermediate Certificate examinations are mapped to the competences of Year 1 – 3 of the Emergency Medicine 2015 Curriculum (ACCS Plus).

The FRCEM Intermediate Certificate is awarded on completion of the following:

  • Short Answer Question (SAQ) paper consisting of 60 3-mark short answer questions in 3 hours
  • Situational Judgement Paper (SJP) consisting of 120 single best answer questions (SBAQ) in 2 hours

What is the FRCEM Intermediate Short Answer Question (SAQ) Paper?

The MRCEM Part B has been replaced by the FRCEM Intermediate SAQ Paper from August 2016. The exam is comprised of a 3 hour paper of 60, 3-mark questions and covers all aspects of the Emergency Medicine 2015 Curriculum including common competences, clinical presentations, anaesthetic and ICM competencies and practical procedures.

MRCEM Part B passes obtained prior to August 2012 are deemed time expired. Previous passes in the MRCEM Part B examination after 1 August 2012 remain valid. Candidates will be permitted a maximum of six attempts for the FRCEM Intermediate SAQ Paper. Previous attempts at the MRCEM Part B examination will not be counted towards the number of available attempts for the FRCEM Intermediate SAQ Paper.

What is the FRCEM Intermediate Situational Judgement Paper (SJP)?

The MRCEM Part C will be replaced with the FRCEM Intermediate SJP from Autumn 2017. The first sitting of the FRCEM Intermediate SJP will be on the 28th September 2017. The exam will comprise of a 2 hour paper of 120 single best answer questions (SBAQs).

For candidates in a UK recognised training programme, the MRCEM Part C will remain a GMC approved qualification for the purposes of CCT if passed up to and prior to August 2018.

After August 2018, all UK trainees will be required to pass the FRCEM Intermediate SJP before being eligible to sit the FRCEM Final examination components. This includes candidates who have passed MRCEM Part A and B, as well as those who have passed the FRCEM Primary and FRCEM Intermediate SAQ paper.

Candidates will be permitted a maximum of six attempts for the FRCEM Intermediate SJP. Previous attempts at the MRCEM Part C examination will not be counted towards the number of available attempts for the FRCEM Intermediate SJP.
