What is Fellowship by Examination (FRCEM)?

From August 2018, the Fellowship examination consists of the following components:

  • FRCEM Primary Examination
  • FRCEM Intermediate Certificate:
    • Short Answer Question Paper
    • Situational Judgement Paper
  • FRCEM Final Examination:
    • Critical Appraisal (Short Answer Question Paper)
    • Quality Improvement Project (QIP)
    • Clinical Short Answer Question Paper
    • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

What is Membership by Examination (MRCEM)?

The College continues to offer Membership by Examination (MRCEM) for candidates who have passed all of the following examinations:

  • FRCEM Primary (or MRCEM Part A between 1 August 2012 and 1 August 2016 or granted exemption)
  • FRCEM Intermediate SAQ (or MRCEM Part B between 1 August 2012 and 1 August 2016)
  • MRCEM OSCE (previously called Part C. Passed after 1 August 2012)

Who is eligible to sit the FRCEM Intermediate Certificate exams?

A candidate will be eligible to enter the FRCEM Intermediate Certificate examinations provided he/she:

  1. Holds a medical qualification approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) for the purposes of registration and
  2. Has completed the UK Foundation Programme or equivalent and
  3. Has passed the MRCEM Part A examination after 1 August 2012 and prior to 31 July 2016 or has passed the FRCEM Primary examination after 1 August 2016 or has been granted exemption from the FRCEM Primary or MRCEM Part A as a result of obtaining MRCS or MRCSI after 1 January 2012.

The FRCEM Intermediate Certificate examinations are conducted in English and candidates are advised that IELTS Level 7 is the expected standard for completion of the FRCEM examinations.

The FRCEM Intermediate Situational Judgement Paper (SJP) comprises a 2 hour paper of 120 single best answer questions (SBAQ).

The FRCEM Intermediate Certificate examinations are mapped to the competences of Year 1-3 of the RCEM Emergency Medicine 2015 Curriculum (ACCS Plus).

How much does it cost to sit the FRCEM Intermediate Certificate exams?

The FRCEM Intermediate Short Answer Question paper costs £305.00 (UK Centres) or £385 (Oman).

The FRCEM Intermediate Situational Judgement Paper costs £200.00.

The College runs a number of examinations overseas in collaboration with overseas Emergency Medicine Colleges and organisations. Candidates wishing to sit examinations at an overseas centre should apply online during the specified application window. Once entry is confirmed, candidates are required to contact the overseas centre to pay any additional local fees (not applicable for Oman, Iceland and Malaysia, local fee collected at time of online application).

How do I apply to sit the FRCEM Intermediate Certificate exams?

Online applications for the examinations will open at approximately 10.ooam (GMT time) on the application opening date and close automatically at 5.00pm (GMT time) on the listed closing date. Applications received after this will not be accepted.

After submission of the online application, as part of the approvals process, the candidate’s Educational Supervisor/Training Programme Director/Head of School or sponsoring consultant is asked to validate that the candidate has completed the required training experience, is familiar with the curriculum and understands the standard required.

What is the pass mark for the FRCEM Intermediate SAQ exam?

The FRCEM Intermediate SAQ and the FRCEM Intermediate SJP are standard set using a modified Angoff Method. One standard error of measurement will be added to the cut scores identified using the Angoff method to calculate the required final pass mark for each paper. This means the pass marks vary between exam diets.

The final pass mark for the March 2018 FRCEM Intermediate SAQ exam was 60.8%.

The pass rate (% of users passing the exam) for the March 2018 FRCEM Intermediate SAQ exam was 35.3%.
